Camino

Help

Short answers to the most common questions. In the game, Settings › How to play explains it step by step.

My steps don't count

Camino reads your steps from Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android). Without that permission, your pilgrim doesn't move.

iPhone In Camino: Settings › Steps › Health permission. The iPhone only asks once; if you said no back then, turn it on yourself: Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › Camino, and turn on Steps. Or from the Health app: tap your profile picture › Apps › Camino.

Android In Camino: Settings › Steps › Health Connect permission. Or open Health Connect (it's in your phone's Settings) › App permissions › Camino and turn on Steps. Health Connect doesn't count steps by itself: an app has to save them there (Samsung Health, Google Fit, Fitbit or your watch's app).

Steps count from the moment you start the route, not before. You don't need Camino open while you walk: it catches up when you open it.

I'm walking, but my route doesn't move
  • Only the route you're walking moves: the one named at the top of the Route tab. To walk another: Route › Other routes › tap the route › Walk this route. Each route keeps its progress.
  • Each route counts steps from when you start walking it (or come back to it), not before.
  • Every km in the game is a real km: about 1,350 steps. A long stage takes a few days.
  • Steps come from Health or Health Connect, sometimes a little late (especially the watch's). Open Camino for a moment so it catches up.
  • If a route shows as paused, this phone is missing its pack: see how to restore your purchases. Its progress is saved.
  • If no steps come in at all, check the permission.
How do I play with an Apple Watch?

The watch app comes with Camino. If you don't see it on your watch, install it from the Watch app on your iPhone.

  1. Before you head out, open Camino on your iPhone: it hands the next few kilometres to the watch. You can also use Settings › Steps › Watch › Send the stage to the watch.
  2. To start: on the iPhone, Walk tab › Start walking on the watch; or open Camino on the watch, pick the Mode and tap Start walking.
  3. The watch buzzes at each place along the way: tap Stop or Keep going. If you don't choose, it counts as Keep going.
  4. When you're done, tap Finish. If you forget, the walk ends by itself after a while without steps, or after 8 hours.

Workout or Light. Workout starts a walking session: it counts your steps live and buzzes right at each place, but uses more battery. It also saves the walk as a workout in Health, so it counts towards your rings (if you turn off Save as a workout in Health, it alerts by your pace, as in Light). Light starts no session: it works out from your pace when you'll get there, so the alert may come a little early or late, and it uses less battery.

Without your iPhone. You can leave it at home: the watch counts your steps and keeps your choices. It hands them over when you're back near the iPhone. If the watch says Prepare the stage on your iPhone, open Camino on the iPhone with the watch nearby.

Android There's no app for Wear OS watches yet. Steps from your watch or band count if its app saves them to Health Connect, and Decide from notifications notifications can show on the watch if it shows your phone's notifications.

Stop or keep going: what's the difference?

Along the way you pass real places: a fountain, a chapel, a viewpoint… There's no wrong answer.

  • Stop: you get a stamp for your credential and sometimes a keepsake for your backpack, but you arrive later. Stop a lot in one stage and you arrive at sunset, with a different postcard.
  • Keep going: you arrive sooner.
  • A stamp in every stage gets you the golden credential.

Without a watch, the places you pass wait for you in the Walk tab, under Along the way, and you decide when you're back. Up to 3 wait; if more pile up, you walk on by some of them.

Decide from notifications (Settings › Alerts): turn it on and, when you pass a place with Camino closed, you get a notification with Stop and Keep going to decide without opening the game. At most 3 a day and never at night. iPhone It's for walks without the watch, and it can come up to an hour late.

I can't walk much

Settings › Steps › Walking assist: pick ×2 or ×3 and every step counts double or triple. It applies from when you pick it (earlier steps don't change), and you can go back to ×1 any time.

There's no rush and nothing is lost: if you don't walk one day, your pilgrim rests and you go on when you're back. In the album's Passport, the km are still the ones you really walked.

Can I change my free route?

Yes, once, while you've walked less than 10 km on it: Route › Other routes › open a route you don't have › Make it my free route.

The new one becomes your free route and the one you're walking. Your progress on the old one is kept, paused, and your postcards and stamps stay in the album. After 10 km, or once you've used the change, your free route stays as it is.

Where do I restore my purchases?

Settings › More › Store › Restore purchases, signed in to the same store account you bought with.

Purchases are one-time and belong to your account: App Store ones come back on your iPhone, Google Play ones on Android; they don't move from one store to the other. If a route was paused because its pack was missing, restoring picks it up where you left it.

I'm changing phones or reinstalling Camino

Your game: first, Settings › More › Your game backup › Export, and keep the file wherever you like (Files, Drive, an email to yourself). On the new phone: Settings › More › Your game backup › Import. It replaces the game on that phone, so Camino asks first.

Your free route is remembered even if you delete Camino. iPhone In the iPhone's keychain; with iCloud Keychain on, on a new iPhone too. Android In your Google backup, if it's turned on.

Your purchases aren't in the file: they come back with Restore purchases (see above).

Something's not right: who do I write to?

Write to softwareqts@gmail.com. It really helps to know:

  • your phone model (and watch, if you use one);
  • your iOS or Android version;
  • what happened and what you expected (a screenshot, if you can).
